PR Perceptions: Media Portrayals and Local PRs

Most of the survey participants were unable to list a TV/Movie PR character or a famous Jamaican PR Specialist. In your opinion, what is the reason behind the low answer rate for these questions?

  1. Should have probably used sexier characters...Now that i think about it...Hancock (terrible movie)...had a PR agent as a supporting actor and it was the whole point of the movie! but who remembers? (except me..I dated a PR specialist).

Seriously...it can be argued that unless a PR agent is promoting themselves then they are most likely going to take a backseat to the client. So i guess all our ficitional and Jamaican PR agents are doing good jobs.

  3. Well said Blackbird.

I can honestly name a few Jamaican PR "Specialists" who always seem to be doing something good, somewhere, just about every day of the week and it just so happens that they are caught doing it.
As i said before, PR is also about promoting yourself. People have to buy into you to comfortably buy into whatever it is you are putting out there. I think Antoinette said it best (in the social aspect blog)where she painted that very real picture of well known and prominent professionals "not posing" for cameras while visiting sick children in a hospital or doing charity work.

I think how the question is interpreted is the reason behind the low answer rate. In answering the question, people are trying to identify official PR Specialists rather than realizing that most of these CEO's etc are their own PR Specialists. My experience has shown that these individuals know exactly what the media will eat up and they will manipulate it as much as possible.

  4. Well said Blackbird. PR specialists are the legs behind the face. The people doing the hard work so a person/company can shine. I agree with Nikolaus that PR specialists also need to sell themselves but to a certain extent. Can't outshine the client now can they?

I think that it is in recent times that people are becoming familiar with the names and faces of people behind the scenes- especially in jamaica. Other bloggers can correct me if I'm wrong but weren't event planners and party promoters and artiste producers relatively unkown by the general public until 5-10 years ago? Now the interest for the people "behind the scenes" is growing slowly but it hasn't quite peaked hence the low answer rate to this question.

  5. Oh and I almost forgot- as for the tv/movie PR characters as The Blackbird said they almost always take a back seat to the other more major characters in films and television shows. The only PR specialist I can think of on television is Samantha Jones on Sex and the City and I can guarantee you that I don't remember her because of her PR skills.

  6. PR persons are less memorable especially in Jamaica. Having not had to work with one i would not have known where to start to look for one. PR is also often a function of the 'marketing and sales' departments of companies and not really a separate entity

  7. Could that maybe account for the fact that we can have really terrible public relations disasters with companies...

Advantage General Insurance area you listening?!?? LOL!
